Top 20 Goals at the Liberty – No 19

In the fanzine this term we have been counting down the top 20 goals at the Liberty to mark a decade at our current home. Over the next few weeks we will countdown one per day accompanied with a video of the striker where possible. At number nineteen is a former skipper and manager of Swansea City.

19. Roberto Martinez vs. Nottingham Forest, September 2005

Goals against the City Ground club feature prominently in this countdown and we start with a goal from the Liberty’s fifth league game. Kenny Jackett’s side were heading for a 0-1 defeat when the ball fell to club captain Roberto Martinez on the edge of the box. The Spaniard chested the ball, sidestepped his marker before unleashing a wonderful chip into the top corner to rescue a point for his side. Martinez wasn’t noted for scoring many goals during his Swans career but this was a memorable strike and it helped us avoid defeat and keep our place at the top League 1.

If you skip to 22 seconds in the video above you can see the strike for yourselves.
